The gāndharva said, : "O Pārtha! In the world, there was a king named Kalmāṣapāda. He was born in the lineage of Ikṣvāku and he was unrivalled on earth in his prowess.
गंधर्व ने कहा, "हे पार्थ! संसार में कल्माषपाद नाम का एक राजा था। वह इक्ष्वाकु के वंश में पैदा हुआ था और अपने पराक्रम में पृथ्वी पर अद्वितीय था।

One day, the king left his capital to go on a hunt in the forest. That chastiser of enemies shot many deer and boars.
एक दिन राजा अपनी राजधानी छोड़कर जंगल में शिकार के लिए निकला। शत्रुओं को ताड़ना देने वाले उस राजा ने अनेक मृगों और शूकरों को मार डाला।

Hungry and thirsty, the king followed a narrow path and met Vaśiṣṭha's great-souled son on the way.
भूखे-प्यासे राजा एक संकरे रास्ते पर चले और रास्ते में उनकी मुलाकात वशिष्ठ के महात्मा पुत्र से हुई।
The son was an illustrious sage and his name was Śakti. He was the illustrious extender of Vaśiṣṭha's lineage and was the eldest of the great-souled Vaśiṣṭha's 100 sons.
वह पुत्र एक प्रसिद्ध ऋषि था और उसका नाम शक्ति था। वह वशिष्ठ के वंश का यशस्वी विस्तारक था और महाबली वशिष्ठ के 100 पुत्रों में सबसे बड़ा था।

अपगच्छ पथोऽस्माकमित्येवं पार्थिवोऽब्रवीत् तथा ऋषिरुवाचैनं सान्त्वयञ्श्लक्ष्णया गिरा
As they came face to face in opposite directions on the narrow path, the king said, 'Move off from our path.'
जैसे ही वे संकरे रास्ते पर विपरीत दिशाओं में आमने-सामने आए, राजा ने कहा, 'हमारे रास्ते से हट जाओ।'
The riṣi then spoke to him in a soothing and kind voice, but did not yield the path, because he was following the path of dharma.
तब ऋषि ने उससे शांत और दयालु स्वर में बात की, लेकिन रास्ता नहीं बताया, क्योंकि वह धर्म के मार्ग पर चल रहा था।
Out of pride and anger at the sage, the king did not yield the path either. When the sage refused to give way, the best of kings, deluded like a rākṣasa, struck the sage with his whip.
अहंकार और ऋषि पर क्रोध के कारण राजा ने भी रास्ता नहीं छोड़ा। जब ऋषि ने रास्ता देने से इनकार कर दिया, तो राजाओं में से सर्वश्रेष्ठ ने, राक्षस की तरह, ऋषि पर अपने कोड़े से प्रहार किया।
Thus struck by the whip, Vaśiṣṭha's son, the best of sages, was angered and cursed the best of kings.
इस प्रकार कोड़े की मार से ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ वशिष्ठ के पुत्र क्रोधित हो गये और उन्होंने श्रेष्ठ राजाओं को शाप दे दिया।
"O worst of kings! Since you have struck an ascetic like a rākṣasa, from today you will become a maneater.
"हे दुष्ट राजाओं! चूँकि तुमने एक तपस्वी को राक्षस की तरह मारा है, आज से तुम आदमखोर बन जाओगे।
O corrupt king! Go from here and wander around the earth, eating human flesh." Thus, Śakti cursed him through the strength of his powers.
हे भ्रष्ट राजा! यहां से जाओ और मानव मांस खाते हुए पृथ्वी पर चारों ओर घूमो।" इस प्रकार, शक्ति ने अपनी शक्तियों के बल से उसे शाप दिया।
Vaśiṣṭha and Viśvāmitrā had had a quarrel over who should be the officiating priest. At that time, Viśvāmitrā, came to that place.
वशिष्ठ और विश्वामित्र के बीच इस बात पर झगड़ा हुआ था कि कार्यवाहक पुजारी कौन होना चाहिए। उसी समय, विश्वामित्र, उस स्थान पर आये।
O Pārtha! The immensely powerful Viśvāmitrā, the riṣi with great austerities, neared the place where the two were quarrelling.
हे पार्थ! अत्यंत शक्तिशाली विश्वामित्र, अत्यंत तपस्वी ऋषि, उस स्थान के निकट पहुँचे जहाँ दोनों झगड़ रहे थे।
After the curse on the great king, the riṣi recognized that the riṣi was none other than Vaśiṣṭha's son, as powerful as Vaśiṣṭha himself.
महान राजा को श्राप देने के बाद, ऋषि ने पहचान लिया कि ऋषि कोई और नहीं बल्कि वशिष्ठ के पुत्र थे, जो स्वयं वशिष्ठ के समान ही शक्तिशाली थे।

अन्तर्धाय तदात्मानं विश्वामित्रोऽपि भारत तावुभावुपचक्राम चिकीर्षन्नात्मनः प्रियम्
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Desiring to bring some benefit to himself, Vishamitra remained there, but concealed himself by making himself invisible from them.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! खुद को कुछ लाभ पहुंचाने की इच्छा से, विश्वामित्र वहीं रहे, लेकिन खुद को उनसे अदृश्य बनाकर छिप गए।
Having been cursed by Śakti, that best of kings sought Śakti's mercy and worshipped him, so as to pacify him.
शक्ति द्वारा शापित होने के बाद, सर्वश्रेष्ठ राजाओं ने शक्ति की दया मांगी और उनकी पूजा की, ताकि उन्हें शांत किया जा सके।

तस्य भावं विदित्वा स नृपतेः कुरुनन्दन विश्वामित्रस्ततो रक्ष आदिदेश नृपं प्रति
O descendant of the Kuru lineage! Knowing the king's nature, Viśvāmitrā ordered a rākṣasa to enter the king's body.
हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! राजा के स्वभाव को जानकर विश्वामित्र ने एक राक्षस को राजा के शरीर में प्रवेश करने का आदेश दिया।

स शापात्तस्य विप्रर्षेर्विश्वामित्रस्य चाज्ञया राक्षसः किंकरो नाम विवेश नृपतिं तदा
Because of the Brāhmaṇa riṣi's curse and because of Viśvāmitrā's instruction, a rākṣasa named Kiṃkarā then entered the king's body.
ब्राह्मण ऋषि के श्राप के कारण और विश्वामित्र के निर्देश के कारण, किंकरा नामक राक्षस राजा के शरीर में प्रवेश कर गया।
O chastiser of enemies! Knowing that the rākṣasa had entered the king's body, Viśvāmitrā, the best of sages, went away.
हे शत्रुओं को ताड़ना देने वाले! यह जानकर कि राक्षस राजा के शरीर में प्रवेश कर गया है, ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ विश्वामित्र चले गये।

Thereafter, the wise king was possessed and tormented by the rākṣasa within him and found it difficult to save himself.
इसके बाद, बुद्धिमान राजा अपने अंदर के राक्षस से ग्रस्त हो गया और उसे पीड़ा देने लगा और उसके लिए खुद को बचाना मुश्किल हो गया।
A certain Brāhmaṇa saw the king roaming in the forest. Being hungry, he begged for some food with meat.
एक ब्राह्मण ने राजा को जंगल में घूमते हुए देखा। भूखा होने के कारण उसने मांस सहित कुछ भोजन माँगा।
Rājarṣi Kalmāṣapāda Mitrasaha said, 'O Brāhmaṇa! Stay here for a while.
राजर्षि कल्माषपाद मित्रसह ने कहा, 'हे ब्राह्मण! कुछ देर यहीं रुकें.

निवृत्तः प्रतिदास्यामि भोजनं ते यथेप्सितम् इत्युक्त्वा प्रययौ राजा तस्थौ च द्विजसत्तमः
When I return, I will give you the food you desire to have. Having said this, the king went away and that best of Brāhmana-s remained there..
जब मैं लौटूंगा तो तुम्हें वह भोजन दूँगा जो तुम खाना चाहोगे। इतना कहकर राजा चला गया और वह श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण वहीं रह गया..
But when he entered the inner quarters of his palace, the king forgot about his promise to the Brāhmaṇa
लेकिन जब वह अपने महल के भीतरी हिस्से में दाखिल हुआ, तो राजा ब्राह्मण से किया अपना वादा भूल गया।
"Go to the forest. A Brāhmaṇa is waiting for me there, hoping to get some food. Take some meat to him."
"जंगल में जाओ। वहां एक ब्राह्मण कुछ भोजन पाने की आशा में मेरा इंतजार कर रहा है। उसके लिए कुछ मांस ले जाओ।"
Having been thus addressed, the cook could not find any meat anywhere and came and sorrowfully informed the king about this.
इस प्रकार कहने पर रसोइये को कहीं भी मांस न मिला और उसने आकर दुःखी होकर राजा को इसकी सूचना दी।

राजा तु रक्षसाविष्टः सूदमाह गतव्यथः अप्येनं नरमांसेन भोजयेति पुनः पुनः
Possessed by the rākṣasa, the king unhesitatingly told the cook, "Feed him human flesh," and repeated his instructions.
राक्षस से घिरे राजा ने बिना किसी हिचकिचाहट के रसोइये से कहा, "इसे मानव मांस खिलाओ," और उसके निर्देश दोहराए।
Agreeing, the cook quickly went to where executioners lived and took some human flesh from them.
सहमत होते हुए, रसोइया तुरंत वहां गया जहां जल्लाद रहते थे और उनसे कुछ मानव मांस ले लिया।
Washing it and cooking it properly, he mixed it with rice and quickly took it to the hungry and ascetic Brāhmaṇa.
उसे धोकर और ठीक से पकाकर, उसने उसे चावल के साथ मिलाया और जल्दी से भूखे और तपस्वी ब्राह्मण के पास ले गया।

Through his ascetic sight, the best of Brāhmana-s immediately recognized the food to be forbidden. His eyes red with anger, he said, "That worst of kings has offered me food that is forbidden.
अपनी तपस्वी दृष्टि से श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों ने तुरंत पहचान लिया कि भोजन वर्जित है। क्रोध से उसकी आँखें लाल हो गईं, उसने कहा, “उस दुष्ट राजा ने मुझे वर्जित भोजन दिया है।

यस्मादभोज्यमन्नं मे ददाति स नराधिपः तस्मात्तस्यैव मूढस्य भविष्यत्यत्र लोलुपा
Therefore, that deluded one will himself become fond of such food.
अत: वह मोहग्रस्त व्यक्ति स्वयं ही ऐसे भोजन का शौकीन हो जायेगा।
Becoming fond of human flesh, as Śakti had cursed him earlier, he will roam the earth and persecute all beings.
मानव मांस का शौकीन होने के कारण, जैसा कि शक्ति ने पहले उसे शाप दिया था, वह पृथ्वी पर घूमेगा और सभी प्राणियों पर अत्याचार करेगा।

Repeated for the second time, the curse on the king became very strong. Being possessed by the rākṣasa, the king soon lost all his senses.
दूसरी बार दोहराने पर राजा पर श्राप बहुत प्रबल हो गया। राक्षस के वश में होने के कारण, राजा जल्द ही अपनी सारी इंद्रियाँ खो बैठा।

ततः स नृपतिश्रेष्ठो राक्षसोपहतेन्द्रियः उवाच शक्तिं तं दृष्ट्वा नचिरादिव भारत
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing Śakti, that best of kings, having been deprived of his senses by the rākṣasa within him, said,
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! शक्ति को देखकर उन सर्वश्रेष्ठ राजाओं ने, जो अपने भीतर के राक्षस द्वारा अपनी इंद्रियों से वंचित हो गए थे, कहा,
"Because you have imposed this unparalleled curse on me, I shall begin my man-eating predicament by eating you first."
"चूँकि आपने मुझ पर यह अनोखा श्राप लगाया है, मैं सबसे पहले आपको खाकर अपनी आदमखोर समस्या शुरू करूँगा।"
Having said this, the king immediately separated Śakti from his life and ate him up, the way a tiger devours its favoured prey.
इतना कहकर राजा ने तुरंत शक्ति को अपने जीवन से अलग कर दिया और उसे उसी प्रकार खा लिया, जैसे बाघ अपने पसंदीदा शिकार को खा जाता है।
Having seen Śakti killed thus, Viśvāmitrā urged the rākṣasa to kill Vaśiṣṭha's other sons.
शक्ति को इस प्रकार मारा हुआ देखकर विश्वामित्र ने राक्षस से वशिष्ठ के अन्य पुत्रों को मारने का आग्रह किया।

स ताञ्शतावरान्पुत्रान्वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः भक्षयामास संक्रुद्धः सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगानिव
Like an angry lion devours small animals, he ate up all the younger sons of the great-souled Vaśiṣṭha.
जैसे क्रोधित सिंह छोटे जानवरों को खा जाता है, उसी प्रकार उसने महाबली वशिष्ठ के सभी छोटे पुत्रों को खा लिया।
When Vaśiṣṭha learnt that Viśvāmitrā had conspired to get his sons killed, he bore his grief patiently, like a great mountain bears the earth.
जब वशिष्ठ को पता चला कि विश्वामित्र ने उनके पुत्रों को मारने की साजिश रची है, तो उन्होंने अपने दुःख को धैर्यपूर्वक सहन किया, जैसे एक विशाल पर्वत पृथ्वी को सहन करता है।

चक्रे चात्मविनाशाय बुद्धिं स मुनिसत्तमः न त्वेव कुशिकोच्छेदं मेने मतिमतां वरः
That best of sages, chief among those who are intelligent, resolved to sacrifice himself rather than set his mind on extinguishing the Kuśika lineage.
उन श्रेष्ठ ऋषियों ने, बुद्धिमानों में से प्रमुख, कुशिक वंश को नष्ट करने का मन बनाने के बजाय खुद को बलिदान करने का संकल्प लिया।

स मेरुकूटादात्मानं मुमोच भगवानृषिः शिरस्तस्य शिलायां च तूलराशाविवापतत्
The illustrious riṣi threw himself down from the peak of Mount Meru and his head struck the stones like a bale of cotton.
प्रसिद्ध ऋषि ने खुद को मेरु पर्वत की चोटी से नीचे फेंक दिया और उनका सिर कपास की गठरी की तरह पत्थरों से टकराया।

न ममार च पातेन स यदा तेन पाण्डव तदाग्निमिद्ध्वा भगवान्संविवेश महावने
O Pāṇḍava! When the illustrious one found that the fall did not kill him, he lit a fire in that great forest and entered it.
हे पाण्डव! जब उस महापुरुष को पता चला कि गिरने से उसकी मृत्यु नहीं हुई, तो उसने उस विशाल जंगल में आग जलाई और उसमें प्रवेश कर गया।
But though the flames blazed up high, they did not kill him. O chastiser of enemies! Instead, the blazing flames cooled him.
हालाँकि आग की लपटें बहुत तेज़ थीं, लेकिन उन्होंने उसे नहीं मारा। हे शत्रुओं को ताड़ना देने वाले! इसके बजाय, धधकती लपटों ने उसे ठंडा कर दिया।
Seeing the ocean, the grief-stricken and great sage tied a heavy stone around his neck and flung himself into the water.
समुद्र को देखकर, दुःखी और महान ऋषि ने अपनी गर्दन के चारों ओर एक भारी पत्थर बाँध लिया और खुद को पानी में फेंक दिया।

But the strong waves brought the great sage back to the shore. With a sorrowful heart, he then returned to his hermitage.
लेकिन तेज़ लहरें महान ऋषि को वापस किनारे पर ले आईं। दुःखी मन से वह फिर अपने आश्रम में लौट आया।
